WHY
We are a group of volunteers seeking a more connected and compassionate community.
Volunteers at Calgary on Purpose believe we can live well together while respecting our differences. For example, some of us see change and multiculturalism as top priorities, while others most strongly value stability and tradition. If we see each other with respect, the different priorities can be used to make us richer as a community. If we slip into fear of "the other" we are pushed apart.
How
We strengthen our civic and democratic culture in order for us to live well together.
There are lots of ways to reach this goal. Here are some things we’ve been trying: hosting events for Calgarians to get to know each other, working with artists to tell stories of the interesting and inspiring people of this city and working with other organizations who also care about helping us to trust and appreciate each other.
Who
We are Calgarians filled with curiosity about, and affection for, the peoples who live here.
Calgarians are ambitious. Hard-working. Compassionate. And fun! With these attitudes, we’ve achieved a lot in our history. And we bring out the best in ourselves and each other when we act with care and love (and are gentle with our differences). While we do not all share the same hopes and dreams, we can – together – build a connected and caring community.

Growing up I was frequently told to go back to my reserve, that I did not belong here, and so I was faced with the ugly reality of ignorance and the deep racism that lies in the foundations of this city and amongst many of its citizens.
